How It Works

"65 per cent of New Zealanders earn between $12,000 and $17,000 a year in retirement. Only 13 per cent of New Zealanders earn over $30,000 in retirement." -Statistics New Zealand

  • A typical* New Zealand couple needs around $50,000 per year to have a comfortable retirement.
  • Government superannuation is currently approximately $393 per week for a couple, or around $20,000 per year.
  • The remaining $30,000 required for 20 years retirement could be made by investing $600,000 at 5 per cent.
  • However, to save the $600,000 would require a saving of $40,000 a year for the next 15 years.
    That's $769 a week.

On the other hand:

  • Purchasing a $400,000 property with a rental of $400 per week (taking into consideration tax refunds) would cost $4,628 a year.  That's $89 per week.
  • After five years the equity in the investment property will be sufficient to enable purchase of a second investment property and a third property in a further five years.
  • After 15 years, based on a conservative capital growth of 6 per cent, the equity in the three investment properties will total $1.2 million.
  • If they sell the properties and put the $1.2 million in the bank, the 5 per cent interest will total $60,000 per year. Alternatively they can keep the properties and live off the rent.
